II. Description: 

For this project we had to summarize and answer questions about our zip project and post them on our blog. A zip project is where you have to choose a topic and create an inquiry question related to that topic and to the English curriculum. At the end of the month of work you have to create an artifact that demonstrates your learning on this project. For my zip project, my inquiry question was as follows: what are some of the most important principles in creating an effective and engaging graphic novel? We researched for about a month to try to find the answer to our question and posted regularly about our progress. I used the digital environment to conduct research about graphic novels, post update blogs, and synthesize onto my blog for my final Document of Learning. In addition, my artifact that I created was a short graphic novel and I used digital environment to take pictures of my graphic novel, download them onto my computer, and then post them on my blog. This is the first time I had taken my own pictures and figured out how to get them on my blog.

5. I enchance the impact of my research or presentation through creative use of technology

Through creative use of technology, I enhanced the impact of my final zip blog post by adding pictures to my assignment to demonstrate my learning. For example, to demonstrate the three types of sequences I learned, which were; moment to moment, action to action, and subject to subject, I used three pictures to show exactly what I had learned and to show that I could create it.

8. I challenge myself to increase my technological literacy by working with apps, software, or mediums that I have not used in the past.

I challenged myself and increased my technological literacy by adding pictures to my blog for the first time. I took pictures of my graphic novel with my phone, sent them to my computer by email, download them into my files, and then posted them onto my blog. This new skill I learned helped me many times in the future when I also had to post pictures onto my blog to make my assignments more interesting.

13. I attribute credit to ideas that are not my own by preparing a Bibliography/Works Cited and by using in text citations.

In my blog post one of the questions was as follows: What resources did you find useful during your inquiry and why were they useful? I created a bibliography for four of the main sources that I used for this project, to give credit for the research and information I learned which was not my own. I also used in-text citations by quoting one of the main websites I used as well as referencing the book I read called Understanding Comics by Scott Mcloud.

II. Description: 

For our English assignment “The Wheel of Revolution” we had to choose an important event from the past and create a wheel that showed the four quadrants of a revolution. The four quadrants are social, technological, economical, and political, (STEP) and we had to show how each of the four quadrants were connected. My topic was the invention of the internet. I used the digital environment by creating my wheel on PowerPoint. This assignment required me to create shapes, change their colours, align the shapes so they were symmetrical, and make text boxes for my writing. After I finished the project on PowerPoint I downloaded it onto my computer and posted it on my blog along with a write up to answer two other questions.

5. I enhance the impact of my research or presentation through creative use of technology

I enhanced the impact of my research and understanding through creative use of technology by making my wheel on PowerPoint. There were no set criteria on how to create the wheel, so I decided to make four circles with rectangles connecting them to create a visual perspective of the wheel of revolution and make it more impactful and clearer for Mr. Morris to read.

7. I design my work with consideration given to aesthetics and design, such as consistent colour schemes, symmetry or organization of visual elements, and overall layout.

When I was designing my project on PowerPoint, I definitely thought about the aesthetics and design of my wheel. I made the large circles dark blue with light blue connecting rectangles so there would be a common colour scheme throughout the wheel. I also made sure to use the PowerPoint feature to align the circles and rectangles and to make the wheel symmetrical. Being aware of the overall layout of my project made my wheel more visually organized and aesthetically pleasing.

8. I challenge myself to increase my technological literacy by working with apps, software, or mediums that I have not used in the past.

To increase my technological literacy, I made my wheel on PowerPoint instead of Word or another software I was familiar with. I have used PowerPoint in the past to create presentations, but I have never created any shapes. So, I used PowerPoint for something new that I am sure I can use in the future when making another visual project.


I. Assignment #3: Petcha Kutcha Residential School Presentation

II. Description: 

Before reading Sherman Alexie’s An Absolutely Dairy of a Part Time Indian our class was split into groups to research specific parts of Indigenous culture and history so we could have background information before reading the book. We had to share our research in the form of a Petcha Kutcha which is a type of PowerPoint presentation with only pictures and has 20 slides for only 20 seconds each. My groups topic was Residential Schools.We each had five slides and we would talk each of our slides for 20 seconds. We choose two articles to also share with the class and had pictures to represent those articles as well. We used the digital environment to create the PowerPoint presentation and added the pictures we needed for each slide. We also used PowerPoint to create a 20 second timer for each slide and then transferred our presentation onto a USB and gave it to Mr. Morris so he could project it in front of the class.

1. I use digital spaces to plan and execute collaborative projects with others.

For this project we created a PowerPoint on Office 365 and shared the document with each other, so we could collaborate and create our project in a digital space. We then decided what slides each person would be in charge of and each person added their pictures to the presentation on their own computer. This shows how we used digital spaces to collaborate and execute our project in an effective way.

2. I tailor my work to appeal to my intended audience and use language and visual design elements appropriate for them.

We tailored our presentation to our intended audience, our class, by using specific visual elements which were appropriate for them. Since we were doing a Petcha Kutcha PowerPoint presentation we needed to have only pictures. This tailored to our audience because Petcha Kutcha move quite fast and if you have a slide full of writing people will probably not read it and it will be harder for them to understand the message. So, we made sure to only use pictures in our presentation to make it more effective for our class to understand. We also made sure to use words that all of our classmates would know and made sure to talk slowly so they could take all the information in.

3. I respond to the work or ideas of others in a way that is compassionate and productive 

During this project we needed to work with the three other members of our group compassionately and productively so we could get as much done in the class time given. I responded to their ideas in a productive way at the beginning of our project when we were deciding the different articles to use. I would give my opinion of that article and they would give theirs. At the end of our project right before we presented I responded compassionately to their speech’s that we were practicing in front of each other. I told them they did a great job and that I thought their speech’s were all really good. 

15. My work demonstrates a positive, productive, and empathetic worldview

Our project showed that we understand and realize what the indigenous people had to go through. We showed a positive and productive worldview by showing what people have done wrong in the past and how we can try to change things now to make them better. We showed we understand it was not right for indigenous people to get taken away from their families to get colonized. Through our presentation it demonstrates our understanding of the wrong stereotypes people placed on indigenous people and showed what we are doing now to try to apologize and take action to help the people impacted by these horrible events.

I. Assignment #4 Nasopharyngeal carcinoma

II. Description

For this science project each person in the class was assigned a different type of cancer. I was assigned Nasopharyngeal carcinoma which is caused when normal cells inside of the nasopharynx, which is the upper part of your throat and inside your nose, start to multiply uncontrollably because of a genetic mutation. I used the digital environment to research all about this type of cancer and create my assignment on a word document.

9. I critically assess research sources for Currency, Reliability, Authority, and Purpose.

During this project I needed to make sure my sources were CRAP tested to make they were as reliable as possible for me to base my assignment off of. I used many official websites such as the American Cancer Society which was current as it was most recently revised on September 24th 2018 and I did this project in October 2018. It was also reliable because it was an official site which was written and edited by many doctors and was written with a good purpose to try to help people identify the symptoms of Nasopharyngeal carcinoma so they can be treated as quickly as possible.

13. I attribute credit to ideas that are not my own by preparing a Bibliography/Works Cited and by using intext citations.

For this project I created Bibliography at the end of my document to give credit to all the people who did the research I read and used in my assignment. I made my bibliography in APA format, so it included the title, author, date, and the link. Adding a bibliography shows that I am attributing credit to the research that other people did.

15. My work demonstrates a positive, productive, and empathetic worldview.

This project shows I have a positive worldview because it shows I understand some of the treatments and cures for this type of cancer and shows I understand that technology is one of the biggest factors that helped doctors and scientist to discover so many cures and other things about this cancer. It shows I understand how important research is in treating cancer.

II. Description

For this project our whole class worked together to create a PowerPoint presentation with every part of the cell included. Each person was assigned a part of the cell and we had to create a slide on a PowerPoint our teacher had made on Teams.  We then made each of our slides and presented it in front of the class. My part of the cell was the nucleus. I used the digital environment by making my PowerPoint slide on Teams and creating my speech in a word document.

Our class used digital spaces to plan and execute our project. To plan the project, we made another document on Teams to find which part of the cell we were assigned to. Then we all went on Teams to find the PowerPoint presentation where we could all collaborate together to create and execute the final product.

I tailored my work to my specific audience, my class, by using language and specific visual elements. For my PowerPoint slide I made sure to not add much text and add a diagram to make my slide more engaging. I also made the font as large as possible so they could easily read it. In addition, in my speech I made sure to use words that all my classmates would be familiar with and to talk slowly so they could understand what I was talking about.

8. I challenge myself to increase my technological literacy by working with apps, software, or mediums that I have not used in the past.

Since we did this project very near the beginning of the year it was one of my first times using the Microsoft app Teams. Using Teams increased my technological literacy and it has helped me quite a lot throughout the rest of this year. In addition, I have worked with PowerPoint before but never with a group of so many people and never on Teams.

14. I ethically use content that is not created by me by using Creative-Commons licensed audio, video, or images and by properly citing these resources

In this project I used a diagram so it would be easier for my fellow classmates to understand what I was talking about and I properly cited my image underneath it on my PowerPoint slide. This shows that I gave credit to the creators of the image as I realize it was not created by me.
